Teenage Depression Poem written by Caroline Rou
With every blink of an eye, someone in this world pulls a blade through their skin
With every time you laugh, someone in this world is considering taking their own life.
And with every step you take, someone in this world feels worthless.
This is called depression.
Depression is an inner-battle, either you win, or you die trying.
Depression is constantly being consumed by the thought of dying
Depression is drowning when everyone around you is breathing
Depression is wishing that your heartbeat would stop beating
Depression is waking up and being disappointed to have your life.
Depression is giving the knife the power to keep you alive.
You wear your broken heart on your sleeve,
and under that rest the scars that are never going to leave.
But yet you continuously carve your emotional instability on your wrist,
hoping that some day you’ll wake up, and cease to exist.
And you stay up crying and screaming at your reflection,
and wake up with even more scars from self-infliction.
The symmetry, the eerie neatness of your scars,
have stolen the light from the moon and the stars.
You have the grace of one never loved enough,
and although at times it does get rough
You have to put on your beaten armour,
and go battle the demons and destroy the monster.
And once you conquer them and finish the fighting,
you can walk to the end of a life in hiding.
To the start of the sea, venturing deep into your infinite ocean
and all thats left is essence and the waves calming motion.
And in this life, there’ll always be chances to drown your heart
In things you honestly shouldn’t care about
And though there’ll always be insecurity and self-doubt,
Things will get better, there is hope, there has been from the start,
and there is no reason to feel set apart.
So keep your eyes open, and you’ll find your own infinite ocean.
